Hi! I just got Photoshop CS and bought a tutorial DVD to learn from.
I have been looking at it for 2 nights (maybe this is where I'm going wrong ...I'm so exhusted by night-time) and I can't get my head around on how to make a frame/matt for my pictures. You know the ones that people put around their pics to make them look nice :)

Can someone post some easy steps to just putting a simple black frame around my pics.

Thanks!

Nathalie

Why not buy Mikes Framer? Cheap and does the job:

A simple black frame. Why not size it to what you want less the frame then extend the canvas to the size you want with the frame and tell it to fill in the new area with black. It is all in the canvas size dialog. I have only started with PS so maybe there is a more elegant solution but this seems simple.

PS I have CS2 and it is the only version I have used to hopefully CS has the same feature. Do you want a more blow by blow description?

Good luck with the rest if you are stuck with the frames!

For a QUICK SIMPLE black frame, i just judge with the cropping tool, then invert it then colour that section in with black.
For nicer black frames etc. go to mikes framer as said before...once you download it, open up the actions part, then load that tool, click on it and press play - it should do the rest for you.
Learning photoshop is hard...
My work wanted a graphic designer...so they asked me because i was interested...i sat down with photoshop LE 5.0 a tutorial book, and i worked on it for 6mths straight 8am-5pm. And still i am learning new things with the upgrades. But now i do logo's, photo retouching, extensive photo work, poster work, brochures...and MUCH MUCH MORE...
I suggest to really involve yourself in photoshop if you want to learn it the right way - it's going to take a long time trust me...it's a hard program to use, and you NEED patience (Something i dont have but HAD to have for works sake). Maybe 6mths is a long time to learn it - but i mean i learnt it from the ground up...basics to now advanced.
But at the end of the day - the program is the best i have ever used, and its the ONLY one i would recommend, the pro's use it so it's obviously the best out there. Dont give up...take breaks when necessary and just do your tutorials day in and day out. It helps!

Extend the canvas with black/white. A thin white then a thick black works well, or vice versa.

I also use Mike's Framer - it works great and it's cheap.
