Minimum shutter speed for US WNT?

I am going to see the US Womens National Team (soccer) play Canada on July 30th. I am planning on taking my 70-200mm F/4L and a 1.4 TC since the game is being played at 1:00 pm.

I usually and plan to shoot Av but wanted to know if anyone had a good feel for a minimum shutter speed to stop the action? I am planning to try to keep it at 1/1000 or faster but wanted to hear from folks with more experience.

1/1000sec will do just fine, so you stay on safe side. Usually 1/500 works already, but since it will be in middle of the day you won't have problems getting 1/1000 or faster even at f5.6. But keep lens wide open since background is pretty annoying with football (sorry soccer) when you have lens stoped down. And one more suggestion... use manual instead of tv or av. With sport it really makes difference.

Be sure to know how to choose your AF points, too.

PhotosGuy, thanks for the reminder of the AF points. I certainly know how to select and use the AF points including the center AF in AI-Servo, but, in the heat of battle, I sometimes forget such important details.
