i am going to alaska and dont have a landscape lens. help.

i am going on a cruise to alaska and have my 70-300mm telephoto/macro lens for animals and flowers but no landscape lens and no extra cash for it. i do however have my kit lens, 18-55mm. any suggestions on shooting landscapes with the kit lens?

get a solid tripod, stick the camera on it and stop down your kit lens (f8-f11) its at its sharpest between that range. its not a bad lens, im sure you'll be able to get some great shots with it. the only wide lens i have is the kit lens..

The kit lens does well with plenty of light. It likes f/8, f/11 is better. You should be able to achieve that up until at least midnight. The darkest it got in Fairbanks when we were there was dusk. You could read a newspaper without artificial light.

As others have said, the kit lens is decent when stopped down to f/8 to f/11.

If you have the cash, I also recommend the following for landscapes in order of preference:

1) circular polarizer
2) tripod, even an inexpensive one (plus a remote)
3) graduated neutral density filters (i.e. Cokin P-series)

Get a lens hood for the kit lens, even if it's a cheap rubber one. I never use tripods on holiday, it's too much trouble - i'm there on holiday not on assignment.

Which Cruise Line? If your headed to Whittier, Alaska, there's a nice eagles nest near the ship. The eagles are always buzzing the ship in the afternoon.
