Well, just shipped mine up to the Calgary, Alberta service center. Didn't cost much to ship it....only $54.00.
Hopefully I'll have it back soon.......I want to be able to use it when I go on holidays in April. :)

A little "bump" in this topic... Well, 2 years or so, but I just contacted Canon about my lens which falls into the serial number range. They asked for additional info and will send the pre-paid label to me to ship to them for repair.

I really hope it comes back "zoom-flop" free... Love this lens, but the barrel can be a *tad* sloppy.

Keep you updated :)

They sent the pre-paid label and it will be shipped out tomorrow (missed the final pickup by the time I got there today). Hope it all goes well. Love that lens!

Well I just purchased my copy refurbed from Adorama... I Checked the S# in the store just to make sure it was higher then a 2...it was a 6... I also noticed that the barrel did not have the bad symptoms that other users have experienced... My barrel is pretty much tite(slight play in it) and when I tilt the lens down it does not creep at all.. I am assuming Canon has revised all the quirks of this lens with the later models..

Mine had this problem but it wasn't just barrel flop. In portrait orientation from 200-300mm, the lens had very soft and damaged looking images. Make sure that is functioning properly when you get the lens back.

I originally had 2 of these lenses. Sent them both back and bought again once it was resolved. Canon and their QC.... :|

Mine was just slightly less sharp when taking verticals.

Anyway, I sent it in to Canon under the recall. It had bad zoom flop originally too however they fixed that at the same time. I had to pay for the shipping to them. Canon paid for the return.

I just got my lens back today from Canon. Sharpness is equally as great in both orientations now, and the lens has NO slop at all anymore. Very firm barrel and will keep up its own weight. Before, it will flop even held at very low angles. It was really bad... Focus is spot on and I am so glad I finally got the lens back, I really missed it!

Canon paid shipping to and from, I did not pay a cent.

*thumbs up*

Haha yes, well, I bought this lens a few weeks ago, used... I figure I had no chance of getting free work done, since it is way out of warranty. But I registered the serial # on the lens, and contacted them for repair. They never ever asked me about purchase history or anything, they just sent me pre-paid labels and I sent it off. Now, maybe because this is a service notice that they don't care if it is out of warranty?
