f/1.8 can be had for $60 on ebay. $325 for the f/1.4 would be considered a steal.

I find mine soft in low light as well

The examples are great... now it's time to decide if i should get the 1.4 or save my money and get the 1.8

I have a 17-500 f2.8 tamron that works great... any suggestions?

Here are a couple...
One is a favorite of my little one and the other just a nature thing to give you some variety. :)

It's a great lens for the buck, but after a year with one, you'll be ready to upgrade, I know I am. ;)
