yeah, hotwheels cars, at least the vintage i had as a kid, are far more robust than the nifty! i don't think there will be a whole lot of these lenses still functioning and getting played with 30+ years from now.. ;)

You never know, the 50 doesn't rust or decay, at least in our lifetime.

Taken from facebook, so lower quality but still shows this very good lens in action.

Is solidity not part of build quality and finish?

Not in my book it isn't. Build quality relates to how well it's screwed together, not how well it will withstand a knock. Mine is perfectly screwed together, and so long as I don't drop it (something I intend not to do with any lens) I don't see that changing.

"Finish" relates to how well the outer (and inner) surfaces are finished, and how well it works. Again I can't fault mine on either front. Years back I had a 35-70 FD zoom lens that had a horrible grating action and I didn't like it for that reason - went through three copies before I accepted it as part of the territory - even though it worked well enough. A friend has a $1600 Nikon long zoom that IMO is even worse, even though again it seems to work well. The "worst" lens I currently have for a grating movement is my Tamron 28-75, even though it's not really that bad and its performance is superb.

I do wish the nifty fifty had a metal attachment ring though, as it would give greater assurance that it was going to last well.

5D & 7D (both gripped), 24-105L, 100-400L, 15-85, 50 f1.8, Tamron 28-75, Sigma 12-24, G10, EX-Z55 & U/W housing, A1+10 lenses, tripods, lighting gear, etc. etc.

QUOTED IMAGE

How come EXIF shows a focal length of 47mm? Taken with a different lens?
