Hi, I'm after a Lowepro toploader, but am unsure which one to go for. I'm thinking 65, 70 or 75. I could just go for the 75, being the biggest, but rather save a bit of money if the 70 or even the 65 will don the job. Would like to fit the hood in too, reversed. Anyone got any of these cominations?

Height alone is probably going to push you to the 75. Your lens is 7.4 inches long, the body adds nearly 3 inches more. The 70 only has 10 inches of depth.

I don't have an EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS, but I do have an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, which is slightly longer and not quite as wide. It fits fine on my 20D with BG-E2 grip, with the hood reversed, into a Toploader 75AW.

Yes, I concur. The 20D/BG-E2 and the 100-400L fits very nicely into the Toploader 75AW. Anything smaller might be too small for the combo.

Check out Lowepro's Stealth Reporter 650AW. It will handle that lens nicely with a body attached. I have the 70-200 f/2.8L IS in mine and often stuff it in there with the hood reversed and 20D/grip attached. I also have a 24-70 f/2.8L and a 16-35 f/2.8L plus a flash unit, meter, and whole lot of smaller accessories in the bag.

75AW works. That's what I use. Just remember to tighten the lens (to hold zoom lenght) otherwise every time you pull it out is does the accordian move which I found to be frustrating (with a toploader). 100-400 w/hood fits, but it's still snug. I wouldn't want to try it with something smaller.

do you have to take out the tripod collar or can the 75AW accomodate it?

Don't know about the 75AW, but the Stealth Reporter 650AW handles the tripod collar on my 70-200 IS just fine. Plenty of room for the large hoods on all the lenses too.

The tripod collar shouldn't make any difference because it doesn't significantly add to the overall height, and there is plenty of room available at that part of the bag. The thing that might make a difference is a QR plate on the bottom of the camera.OBTW - another vote for the 75AW.Have Fun,

I manage to get my setup (20D, BG-E2, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS) into a Toploader 75AW with the tripod ring on the lens, a Manfrotto 200PLARCH-14 (RC2 anti-twist plate) on the ring, and the hood fitted reversed on the lens. I suspect you'll be able to do the same with the 100-400; the grip is deeper than the tripod ring.

If you want a bigger bag, do check out the Stealth Reporter Skip mentions. I have the later D650AW version, the same lenses as he does, and it all goes in the bag along with my laptop. Recommended - but heavy when fully loaded (around 12kg for my setup).
