Grrr...

Went to a wedding last night, and took pictures using the new flash. I've got nothing spectacular, but it was just snapshots anyway.

A few things really did me in this time.

1) Lesson Learned: Always carry a spare set of batteries for the flash. I ran out at an inopportune time.

2) All you can hope for in capturing a big room is ISO 1600 and a very big aperture, if you lack either one of those things, its hopeless to get a proper exposure, becuase flash won't cover it!

3) The groom in every single picture I took had his eyes closed. All but one, which was done without flash.

Now, on to the question:

Obviously, this is about #3, as the subject of the post says. Is it possible that E-TTL II flash metering is to blame for my closed-eye subject?

If that is the case, I know I can get around it by using FEL, but I also realise that can cause confusion with the subjects: When they see the flash fire, they think they're done. I suppose manual flash is another possibility, but that has its own set of problems.

The groom may have been someone who blinked from the preflash every time - such that when the main flash fired a very short time later, he always had his eyes closed.
