Good timing. Seems like they had plenty of airtime....
How is the sharpness? (hard to see in these samples)
May I suggest Manyk SRS (external link) for sharpening for web?

The pictures were sharpened a bit with Photoshop and they are pretty sharp, some more than others. It was my first time out with my 85 1.8 and I was very impressed with it's focusing. I've used my 100 2.8 macro and my 50 1.8 before. The 100 was a little to slow focusing. I'll try the web sharpening action when I get a chance. Thanks

Thanks Bruce. We have another competition this weekend here in Jacksonville. The lighting isn't as good as Daytona so I probably won't take as many photos. Plus I've taken so many of the dances over the past competitions that I really don't need anymore. But it's hard not shooting. A few of the dances my daughter is in has won about $3000 so far this weekend. That's split between all the girls in each dance. So it's been a good weekend. This is her last competition. She taking next year off to enjoy her senior year in high school.

WOW! Your photos are just so beautiful! My 7-year-old daughter will have a recital in August. What did you do for white balance and metering? How far were you sitting from the stage? I have used my 50 1.8 lens, but I definetly want to invest in an 85 1.8 lens after seeing your photos.

I set the white balance to tungsten. I believe thats what most stage lighting is. The Rebel doesn't have spot metering so I used partial metering and set the camera manually. I'm not sure how far back I was maybe 15 rows from the stage. I had my wife put her pruse in the seat in front of me so nobody would sit there. This was a competition and people come and go according to who's dancing. For the most part I had pretty clear shooting. At recitals it's usually packed so its harder avoiding heads. Glad you like the pictures

Thanks for posting these and the equipment used. I may have an opportunity
to cover a Greek Step Show this Fall. Having never done one of these comps.
before (and not yet knowing the lighting and floor dimensions) I needed a
starting point :).

Stan
P.S. Anyone with specific experience with these Step Shows?

These were taken in Daytona at the Peabody Auditorium during the IDC dance competition this past week. I was so happy to see good lighting. Usually you go to dance competitions and the people who put them on don't spring for good lighting. I was able to shoot at ISO 800 at 1/320-1/400 and 3.2. I used my D Rebel and a Canon 85 1.8. The girl in white is my daughter. I used Nest Image and a little sharpening in Photo Shop.

Wonderful images. You probably got pictures as good as or better than the professional photographer they hired.

I was about 15 ft away from the professional photograher. He had 2 Canon bodies on a nice tripod setup so he could easily switch between them. Not sure of the lenses. One looked like a Canon 24-70 L. His shots looked pretty good. But he wasn't doing any post processing. He had a few laptops and printers and was printing them in the lobby, up to poster size. I don't know his prices. He seemed to be doing a good buisness. Thanks everyone for your kind comments

I like the shots... but I would mix up the crops a bit on them when presenting a series - even if they are shot from the same location - to enhance interest in the shots. It will help what are good shots from achieving a "sameness" to them. Looks like it was fun though.... cheers.
