Hi I am looking for advice and constructive critism on this photo. This was taken with a 20D and a 17-85mm efs Canon lens. Thank you.

I think it's nicely composed, and the exposure looks good. The lamp post being dead-center bugs me a little, but not badly.

You need to clean your sensor. The dust is showing.

The excess sky above the moon doesn't really add anything to the photo, so I might be tempted to crop it out. Otherwise I think its a good photo as far as composition and exposure.

Hi do you think that with the colors going from dark blue and fading down that it needs the extra sky? Thanks everyone for the input.

With all that sky above the moon, I find myself searching for something of interest in the dark blue sky...only to find just dark blue sky. If you had a few clouds, I'd say keep it for sure, but since it's bare...I'd say crop it out.

I'd crop the sky, no higher than the distance between the lamp and moon.
I found the pole in the centre distracting too. Maybe try cropping on the left to where the clouds (or far mountains) start?

I would have stepped twice to the left, including that half cut light pole, and leaving the main pole off center. And as said here, I would have lowered the perspective to include more water and its reflection, rather than so much sky. This can be done by getting closer to the dock's edge, or lower/higher, and tilting the camera about, toying until you get the desired perspective.

With that being said, I think you've got the eye, and found a great opportunity for a very good looking photo. Cheers,

Using the "rule of thirds", it does look like you could have brought the horizon up on this shot. Also, I agree that moving left a bit would have brought the other post in and would have added to the image.
I love the colors. Good job!

For the moon, I would either make it bigger (I.E. take a shot of it with a longer lens and photoshop that in) or photoshop it out entirely.

Hi!

The photo looks good: it's sharp, it's has good colours and the compostion is well-chosen.

As a suggestion I think you could have either cropped out the left light pole or included more of it.
