ah, this just came up on a thread re rental in nyc, where there is one for rent at a reasonable $30/day. might be fun to try, but then all of the reviews i've read of it say that its not such a wonderful lens.

well, 50mm f/1.0 doesn't count because its no longer in production.

Awww, you're no fun! :) Actually, the lens gets a 9 out of 10 on FM.

mmm. but castleman found it non-competitive with the f/1.4 at the same apertures, and too soft wide open to give results of any use.

his conclusion: there's little or no photographic rationale to own one.

which kinda makes sense: the lens wouldn't have been discontinued if there was a market for it.

I'd say the 50 1.4. The image quality is just mind numbing.

hmm I used to work for a photo lab that printed his stuff. To be nice about it, I wouldnt take his word for a whole lot of anything  He was a nice guy, but doesn't need to be writing reviews IMO.

But, most every review I've read say that lens isnt as sharp as the 50mm F/1.4, so I would say he's right on this one.

i'de have to say for most purposes, 50mm is sharpest (all depends on the shot you want after all)... however, i do know what the hands down shapest lens for <100 msrp is.. 50mm 1.8 (only lens in it's price range that's good for anything ;))

I'ld rather say 50mm compact macro. The 50/1.4 isn't all that sharp untill stopped down two stops. From what I've read the 60 EF-S macro might be another option. The 100mm macro is very sharp as well. Maybe buy one used?

I used to own the 135L. And the 35L and 85L for that matter. ;)

I'd consider the 60mm, but it's not for me at the moment.

and see how you've strayed :-(

radical statement: i think the 35L is highly overrated.
and the 60mm (and probably 50 macro) are sharper than the 85L. (they'd better be, otherwise the 85L wouldn't be the "perfect portrait lens".) methinks 60mm is too sharp for portraiture, unless you're doing something gritty or are really good with the photoshop.

LOL strayed? Bottom line is, I had to make a sacrifice for versatility. Long story. And saying that the 35L is "overrated" is sacreligious on these forums. ;)

I do just fine with the 50mm and even the 70-200L for portraits at the moment. The 60mm would be a just a tad redundant IMO. Plus, I gave up on macro photography for the time being. If or when I ever get back into it then maybe I'll consider it. I'm sure there will be a time when all three lenses end up back in my kit, but for now I'm getting along just fine without them. Starting with the 85L. It was the least used of the three, but the one I miss the most.
