I guess this could also go on the lens discussion board, but I would like a view from macro users that are likely to use this more than most...

Do you consider any of the following to be a reason not to get this lens over the Canon 100mm.

  • The length it extends to when going to 1:1
  • The speed/sound of the autofocus for regular use; I would like to use it as a regular lens for family shots (including kids running around etc.)
These are my only concerns, as the performance of this lens for macro work appears to be amazing.

What is the price for this lens? Is it comparable to the 100mm Canon or 105mm Sigma?
I would seriously consider the Canon or Sigma before making and purchases.

Canon 30D

Canon 10D
Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 II USM

It is pretty much £100 (around $200 I guess) less than the Canon. Initially, I was planning on the canon, but with a lens hood and lens case included, the price difference (which is almost a 430 ex!) and the reputation of its sharpeness/resolution I'm extremely tempted by the tamron, providing the issues I have mentioned are not seen to be that great an issue during regular use.
