Just got this lens with a used 40D - but was wondering whether I should sell it since I already have the range bracketed with my 18-55 and 55-250. I like the idea of having some decent range in a walk-around lens, but I could really use to reclaim some cash too.

It probably comes down to keeping either this lens, or the 18-55/55-250 combo. (Or try to sell all 3 and pick up the Tamron 18-270.)

Advice?

try it out...see what you think...using it for a week or two isn't really going to cost you anymore money than what you'd be able to sell it for anyways...

see if you like the range...if you don't sell it...if you do...well then you might need to reevaluate all your lenses...

I like the lens. I use it as a nice walkaround lens for car shows mostly.

I tried some shots earlier today with the 40D and this lens... and I don't know if it's because there's a UV filter attached to the end, but the sharpness was total crap when viewing the pics in DPP. (I was shooting RAW mode, if it matters.)

The noise at ISO 800 was also very noticeable, which I thought was not supposed to be a concern with the 40D.

So far... it looks like this lens is on its way out the door. I'm going to try some shots later with the 55-250 IS and see if I can get better results. I'll probably also try the 28-135 on my XTi and see how it does there. (I'd hate to think there's something wrong with the 40D camera body itself.)

It's too bad, because I got a good deal on the lens, and it would make for a nice walk-around covering a decent focal range... but I am not getting output anywhere near as good as what I have seen in this thread.

take the filter off if you think it might be hurting the sharpness

Even with a 40D noise will be very exposure-sensitive. The more you use the expose-to-the-right approach the less noise should be an issue. You might want to start a new thread with some samples from your 28-135 to see if anyone can suggest how to get sharper images with it; it might just be your copy of the lens is off, but who knows?

Got this shot earlier this evening, using macro mode. That's a 2-year-old's hand... it looks huge!

Filter on. I think I'll give this lens a second chance and see what it can do...

Bought this lens to hold me over till I could afford myself a 70-200mm but was not too impressed by it. Returned it the next day. Decent walk around and quality but decided to go with the 55-250mm for the extra range and sharpness. Plus, some of the pics from the sample thread totally blew my mind.

Here's a shot while I had it
