It still makes me sad. I'm glad to see that the SP influence still in evidence. UP doesn't wash their equipment now. Most of it looks as ratty as the Espee ever did.

Hey, ratty looking or not....an 11 unit lash-up is still a treat. Most stuff running thru the mountains here is pretty dirty all the time. NS won't win any clean contests either.

Most people would complain about a view like that :-)
This is a bit like an aircraft fanatic overlooking the LAX approach path...

I wonder how long a train they could pull if they were all running? Nothing like flagrant amounts of torque & hp!

Oh my. A trainspotter as well! My faves are still the Greasley "Malard" class locos, but I can never pass up a good diesel TU.

What are the large flat panels on engines #1, 5, 7 and 9? Anyone have a close-up shot of that? I've never seen anything like it on this coast.

I looked through all my stuff for a close up. No luck. I can say that it is not sand. Depending on which model locomotive that is, it could be the air conditioning unit, or just electrical stuff. If I could read the numbers on those units, I could be more sure. They look similar to the 5500 series, which have a box like that, but I don't think it is as tall as those in the photo. And right now I can't remember which units have those real tall boxes behind the fireman's seat.

Those 4,000 HP units all working together would be a nightmare. An engineer could rip the train apart so easily with that much power.

I'll get a picture of the loco wash at Hinkle in action for you! Heck, they even come out of it clean once in a while:lol:
