In the past the pilot light on my 580EX flash always turned green indicating the flash was charged. I took it out this weekend after not using it for nearly a month and the pilot stayed red. So I replaced the batteries with a fresh / new set of Energizers AA batteries. The pilot light will still not turn green. Sometimes it is briefly green when I first turn on the flash unit, however the pilot light immediately goes back red without taking a picture, etc.

Has anyone encountered this before? Adivce?

Red means fully charged, green means 'ready for Quick Flash' (1/6 to 1/2 of max. output availiable)
Your batteries were empty before ;)

You will get a "green" light after a shot to show that it was exposed properly.
