Hi guys. Sorry I haven't been around for awhile. Been crazy with my business for the past few months. But now I'm getting a little breathing room, to hang out again with all my POTN friends.

Anyway, I recently was asked to photograph a neighbor's sweet 16 birthday party. I used my Tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens and my 580 flash with a LightSphere diffuser. I shot all pictures at ISO 400 and used slow shutter speeds to allow as much background light as possible to be captured. I really don't like the harsh flash look and try to make the images look as natural as possible.

The first two pictures are daddy's little girl. Your comments and CC are always appreciated. :D

Very nice. It definately captures the moment(s). How does the lightsphere differ (in terms of effectiveness) over say a sto-fen?

I like the second one - their expressions are so sincere and happy (such a sweet moment between father and daughter! I love Dad's smile - so proud!!). You could try and edit it (crop, and tone down the background?). The first is shot great too (a very nice portrait shot), but it's not as candid and heartfelt as the second.

Thanks. I have and use both products. Usually, I like the results of LS II better. The light is softer and seems to spread out more evenly over a larger area. Although if the ceiling is too low and too white, I'll get too much bounce-down light from the open-ended LS II. I can put the dome on, but I'm usually not as happy with the results as when I use the Sto-fen in that case. Both products have found a useful place in my equipment bag.

Hi Dante. Thanks very much for your comments. :D

I wanted to capture the available light to make the pictures look as natural as possible. One of the first things I do when I set up at a location is meter the background to find out what the available light levels are. Then I try to match the ISO (usually 400 indoors), the flash output and shutter speed to match the available light levels. I do this so the flash doesn't overpower the natural light levels but just fills. Just like you would do outdoors. If I set the camera to ISO 100 the background would have been 2 stops darker than what you are seeing in these images.
