I know this has been hashed out so many times, but I have pretty specific needs for a new laptop, and can't seem to find what I want in my price range. I suppose I may need to raise my range. Thoughts/advice are welcome. I want a laptop to run CS2 with the following:
1) 1 gig RAM
2) <15" high quality screen, that I can calibrate/profile and make decent color decisions by. I don't want anything greater than 14.1"
3) Separate video card
4) Core Duo >1.6 mghz
5) <$2000
6) Windows XP Pro

I don't want a MAC, unless you can convince me that CS2 will run find on a Mactel. I've looked at Hp dv100t, but it doesn't have dedicated video, and the Dell E1405, but haven't heard great things about its screen.

I just started playing with an IBM T60 at work...

It's got the memory/CPU requirements you're asking for; and as much as it pains me to say it (I LOVE my Dell laptop) the battery life is phenominal!

Dell might have other (better) screens as option, check it out. Our old Latitude was bought with "side order" 1600x1200 screen which is one of the best I've seen on any laptop. I have also LG LW20 which is a great little laptop, but it has lousy screen (no saturation).

I love my macintel, but unless you run bootcamp, CS2 is running in emulation mode and is not going to be really fast.

I'd go w/ a Thinkpad.

Just bought a Dell for my wife: 2gig RAM, 1.6 meg hz duo processor, 80 gig 7200RPM hard drive, 15.4" SXGA+ LCD panel and windows xp. Thing cost less than $1400.

My XPS loaded cost about $3k. (17" LCD)

My Dell 6400 is only 2 months old and has the 15.4" UltraSharp(TM) Wide Screen SXGA+ TFT Display with Truelife(TM): 1680x1050
I love it and everybody who has seen it just can't believe how crisp and clear it is.

Here you can read about Bootcamp. It is a program that let´s you install windows on a partition in your Mac.

Angel_LCD's got it right. It does not require a reinstall of the Mac OS, but rather allows repartitioning of the hard drive w/ out destroying anything on the drive. Then you can install XP w/ SP2 on the new partition and dual boot..

Have a look at the VAIO range. Sony's "X-Black" screen technology is pretty much unbeatable.

Does Bootcamp cost anything? Will it come pre-installed in future versions of Mac OS? Why would I want to buy a MAC, purchase Windows and run Windows when I can get a cheaper PC?

A Vaio with what I want is a bit beyond my range, of course getting what I want in my range may be impossible.

When I went to Sony's site I didn't see an option for xblack. Is that standard on all their laptop screens?

I think XBRITE is the new generation of the technology.

My laptop is Onyx-Black... it then went to X-Black, and is now XBRITE.

the new macbook has the following specs for the video card:
Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory. Does this mean it doesn't have a separate card? Do you think I need a laptop with a separate video card for hardcore PHotoshop work with RAW files?
