nevermind....you're talking about the Whibal plugin. I was speaking more specifically of that Whibal card. I shoot only in RAW, so a JPEG plugin is useless for me.

I just got my Whibal white balance card today and tried it out. I used the whibal to get a test shot... then shot this image using auto white balance from the camera. The auto white balance didn't do a horrible job... but as you can see, the Whibal brought the real colors out. Auto tends to be a little on the warm side here. I didn't do noise reduction or sharpening to the auto balanced image so don't look at the softness and noise as related to the whibal shot... just to be fair. The only thing to judge here is the white balance.

First is the auto white balance... then the whibal balanced corrected image.

Looks like a cool little accessory! Anybody need a pair of grey cards? ;)

I also have a WhiBal card. It is easy to use and fits in the camera toploader bag, where is resides unless in use, so it is always available when needed. I understand that there are less expensive options available, but I think it is worth the price. It is a useful and used tool in my kit.

Are you using the G5 or the G6? I am reall curious about the difference between these 2.

Well, ok sure... all of these things will do the job of getting good white balance... but tell me how convenient is it to carry around 8x10 gray cards for on location shoots? I have one too and it works well in the studio... but I really couldn't find anyway to put it in my bag without folding it and I didn't want to do that. And you know there may be that rare occasion where I want my model in something other than a white t-shirt. ;)

This little card is the size of a photo ID and has a great black point and white point reference on it. I can hang it around my neck with the included lanyard. It has this little clip thing that I can just pull it off and get a reference shot with it...put it back on the lanyard, then move on.

From a convenience standpoint... I DO notice a difference.

My WhiBal is the G5, as that's the style that was current when I bought mine.

If I was buying now, I'd probably go for the G6. I don't really shoot JPEG, but if I did, the Photoshop plug-in is available, so there's no need for the dark grey card. I don't suspect that the white card is missed, either - you've got the black and white sticker on the G6.

i was tempted to go with the g5 because i was worried that the sticker would eventually come off or get damaged. the durability of the card itself seemed to be one of the main selling points, but that isn't the case with the sticker on it...

G6 is an all in one card and is illustrated earlier in the thread. The G5 has three cards (but is no longer manufactured). There is no difference in each version's performance. G6 is therefore more compact and fits easily in a shirt pocket.

I use the G6 and it is very useful. For anyone shooting in RAW a Whibal rocks!! :D

Just as an FYI, you can also use an object that just about anybody with a EF lens has, the black lens cap with a silver "Canon" lettering on it. Can't get any cheaper than that. ;)

I'm impressed... in fact so impressed I've just ordered one.
However my wallet isn't as impressed, it's cost me a fortune since I found POTN! :p

Would I be able to use Whibal for WB? I shoot jpeg only.
What I do now with indoor flash photography is take a picture of a white sheet of A4 paper, save that image as a custom white balance, then choose CWB on the 350D.

pat, according to their website, they offer a plugin that allows you to use the whibal with jpegs. i was thinking about ordering one myself. it seems pretty handy and easy to take anywhere. price is nice too.

hey forkball, i noticed you have a gretag macbeth chart. i just got one an am going to create different profiles for ACR for different lighting conditions. have you done that as well? if so, did it fight you? i tried twice so far just to test it out and i was having a hard time trying to get things to match up numerically. just wonderin'

Also, know if you're a NAPP member there is a discount on the Whibal. I own and use one and it's great. Saves time when shooting RAW in consistent lighting. Just squeeze into one of your shots and shoot the rest as you normally would. Definitely recommended.

Just for the purpose of being complete... this is what I WAS using. Not very convenient to bring on site... and pull out for every location change. Don't get me wrong... it did work effectively. But I couldn't just hang this around my neck. I also laminated it because it was cardboard and easily ruined otherwise. One nice side effect of laminating it was that the reflection was a bit sharper and at a more narrow angle... so I could see it easier in the viewfinder which made it easier to tilt it so that the reflection was gone.

I think I have one of those also. Came out of some book if I am not mistaken.

But then how would those good folks at Whibal eat?
