Hi again. To answer my own question, the sigma's front element is held with tape just like the promaster lens shown earlier in this thread.

It works, optically, but Sigma AF lenses are not compatible with Digital EOS so you get Err 01 if you use any aperture less than maximum. It'll only work with maximum aperture.

Not too sure where you get that info, plenty of Sigma lenses getting used on EOS bodies both digital and 35mm
:confused::confused:

KingRoach is correct. Many older Sigma lenses are not compatible with newer Canon EOS Digital cameras. Some could be "re-chipped" but many will give ERR 01 as described.

Newer Sigma lenses are reverse engineered to be compatible, but every once in awhile Canon does something that makes trouble for 3rd party lens manufacturers. Same goes for 3rd party flash manufacturers.

Mostly it's the sigma lenses designed for film EOS bodies that give issues when used on digital EOS bodies. I've passed on a bunch of them for that very issue.

I haven't seen it mentioned on here, but I wondered if it worked with a Canon EF 35-105 USM F/4.5-5.6. I couldn't find an online manual or schematic to check the organisation of the elements. I just took the front element off, but it didn't work. Clearly the focus elements are at the back (despite the focus ring being at the front), so if you're thinking of trying to mod this lens, don't bother! (It's actually pretty easy to put back together, though, so if you do try, you probably won't ruin it.

Hi, I posted to this thread a few times before under an old username, a few years back it led me to get one of these lenses and do this mod using the USM version.

Since then I created a Flickr group which has quite a few members and a really awesome pool of photos showing what can be achieved, most better than I can do but it's great seeing so many examples by other people.

I also did a short blog a little while ago briefly looking at cheap methods of macro including this one in particular and credited this forum as my inspiration for trying it in the first place.
