Thanks to all who contributed to this very informative and inspirational thread. I pretty much joined the forums solely due to THIS thread. I'm sure there's much more though.. =)

Anyways, I came up on a Canon 35-80mm III lens when I purchased a telephoto lens from someone as a freebie almost. I was going to just sell it with an old Canon Rebel 2000 when I came across this thread. I love modifying things and quickly jumped the gun and took apart my 35-80mm to make the macro conversion!

Anyways, I have some tips on removing the glass elements to save the plastic filter/lenscap housing. After you have successfully removed the three screws the piece of plastic and (3) glass pieces should come out as a single piece. Work on the rear piece of glass by using a razor or xacto knife to carefully/gently peel away at the plastic around the edges. When most of the plastic is pushed back, take a screwdriver and pry it out. This should be fairly easy if you pushed ALL of the plastic holding that rear glass back.

Now the front element is (2) glass elements stacked pretty much. The power-tool-free removal method involved a wooden dowel (we actually used a stirring spoon from the kitchen) and a towel. We wrapped the remaining plastic piece in a towel with the front glass facing down. We just put the round, non-spoon side against the glass and pushed down fairly hard (my brother used all his body weight ~ 68 kg. They popped out with no problem at all! Now I have a basic filter and lens cap on it to prevent any dust on my rigged 35-80mm macro!

As for the results: We have quite a few good results with our setup. I'll attach two of my current favorite ones as well as our set-up.

Wow, thanks for your post! I did this mod a while ago after seeing it on another site and will now work on the front element. One thing worth noting - I saw on another site that if you keep the MIDDLE bit of glass from the element, that will let you shoot from a bit further away (10cm I seem to remember them saying) and give you autofocus. I can't verify this, but will reply if I am successful in preserving it.

I just picked up an old "Rebel S" with a 35-80 MK I on Cragslist . It only took about 20 mins to take it apart, remove the 3 elements in the front focusing part, and then put it all back together with a filter.

And here are the results:

Here is what the 35-80 MK I lens looks like after the surgery.

GREAT results msowsun! I think I'll have to have another go at taking some more macro shots with my hacked 35-80!

Does anyone know if this same trick works with the USM version? I think I'll give my McGuyver genes a little mini-workout.

Funny thing is, I just got myself a 35-80mm Power Zoom lens as part of an ebay purchase still waiting on the shipment, but all I wanted was the lens for the novelty of it. POWER ZOOM, LOL. Anyways, if anyone is in need of a cheap EOS film body, it came with a EOS 700, I'll let it go for $20+shipping.

I think it will work with any lens where the front element does the focusing.

Bump :p

Got this lens for free today from a colleague...

...very pleased with the results, the 40D viewfinder is pretty decent and big so this will come in handy but better yet is live view with 2x magnification which is even better for getting focus right.

Just had a go with this today. Picked up a 35-80 for $20 and took the 3 front elements out. Great macro for $20. Definitely choose this over a set of plain tubes with no connections for $20.

Hi to all,
Can anyone tell me if I use a Sigma 28-200 or the Canon 80-200 or even a Sigma 70-300 and remove the front element will I also "get" a Macro lens ? If so, how can I calculate the magnification ?
Thank you in advance,
Raul Costa

Nope. There is no front element to rotate.

You have to move back and forth to focus.

Just signed up to post in this thread.
Got a 35-80mm USM with an old EOS film camera I bought on ebay and instantly took the front element off thanks to the posts here, couldn't be happier with the result.
I had previously been shooting 'macro' with a Sigma 18-200m OS + close up filter but this has got me to whole new levels of close-up and for such a small price.

I've made a Flickr group to try and find other people with successful results off this lens, if anyone here is on Flickr I'd love for you to post some photos to it.

Got my 35-80 the other day from a pawn shop. Found it in the $1 bin :D

Got crackin, and this is what I got. The light was very very dim, but they'll do for test shots. Still, a macro lens for $1, cant beat that.

Hi.

Just seen this thread.

Does it work with a 35-70?

Any idea the best way to hack it? There are no screws or sticker...

Cheers
John
