I read that the lens flare isn't too bad without a hood, but do I still need one? Also do I need any filters? I actually don't know a thing about filters... any advice or suggestions on that? Thanks :)

It's the obvious 'blah blah blah, what are you shooting, etc' comments, but, a hood is a great idea, regardless of what you shoot.. it offers good lens protection among other things. I'd get (got) one.

Filters.. depends on what your shooting ;) Circular Polarizer, UV, etc. Whatever you do, don't buy a cheap filter.

Ok sorry, I'm shooting landscapes... and yeah since I don't know anything, I thought there might be a "general all purpose" filter ;)

I wanted to get it before my Hawaii trip. So mostly scenic nature like stuff, maybe indoors, buildings, anything really.

As for the hood, does it matter what kind of petal shaped hood I get? I know I'm supposed to get that type, but are there a lot of options I need to consider? :p

Yes, you need to get the hood made for this lens. EW-83

Nope, it's not your eyes. I thought I had messed it up the first time I noticed that.
