Although Syd (Roger Barrett) and Waters being in PF was before my time, they produced some of the greatest music ever, imo. I do like the stuff with Gilmore singing but its just not the same.

Agree. Stirs so many memories of my college days when I listen to PF. May his soul rest in peace.

i've never heard any of pink floyd's pre darkside of the moon work, and I've been curious because from what I gather it sounded quite different. I'm a big gilmour fan though, but I'm sure I'd enjoy the older work.

You should also check out some of Syd Barrett's solo work. Brilliant.

A very sad day indeed!! I only recently (within the last 5 years) discovered the wonders of PF.

That's sad - seems like many of the great ones are reaching the end....

Nobody knows where you are,
How near or how far...
Shine on you crazy diamond

Pile on many more layers,
And I'll be joining you there
Shine on you crazy diamond

And we'll bask in the shadow of yesterday's triumph,
And sail on the steel breeze.
Come on you boy child, you winner and loser,
Come on you miner for truth and delusion, and Shine!

The real tragedy is that Syd wasn't a great one, but a might-have-been who was destroyed by drugs.

Dangerous thing to say.
He certianly could have been greater, but still did some very great things before his break down.
I think most people, including Pink Floyd themselves, will agree that it was Syds vision, creativness and imagination that gave the band its direction.

From www.brain-damage.co.uk (external link)

The final question was about the old Dark Side of the Moon/Wizard of Oz theory, which was met with mock exasperation by Mason. He closed the Q&A session by suggesting that if anyone had the time and inclination they might want to listen to The Wall while watching The Dam Busters, as apparently that doesn’t work either!

Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You were Here and later The Wall were all inspired by Syd's life. He is one of the founding members for Pink Floyd and actually named the group. Destroyed by drug overdose, yes - but a very prominent member during the founding days of PF ;)
