Thanks everyone for the comments. It's funny watching her with it, she was so used to the timing on her A75 (namely the time between when she fully presses the shutter button to when the camera actually takes the pictures, also the powerup time), that one of her first comments was "Wow, this camera's fast!"

I also forgot to post the haul... it was

DRebel XT + Grip + Strap
580ex flash + Pocket bouncer
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro (she loves taking closeups with her A75, so I thought I'd mess her up for a bit with this lens)
Remote shutter cord
A LowePro bag
A cheepie Velbon monopod

I'm hoping that this lasts her well into college. I was telling her that her next camera body, one of those nice 1d cameras, will have to be purchased either by her or by her future husband :p

Maureen, I'm 100% okay with it if she surpasses me :)

Dragonfli, I'm too broke now to adopt anyone. I might have to consider selling off one of my sons... (j/k)

Kennys350d, she might decide to pursue photography. If she doesn't, it'll just be her skill that hold her back for a while.

Kev350d, oh, don't you start giving her ideas on L glass. Well, okay, I guess you can give her the ideas. It'll just be her pocketbook that pays for them

SuzyView, she hasn't taken too many pictures with it so far (she's at camp this week, with her P+S--we didn't want her to lug along the XT and possibly break the new camera). She's taken some amazing pictures with the P+S (and a bunch of duds, too), so I'm sure she'll starting learning with it when she gets back. Who says summer school can't be fun?

Again, thanks everyone for your comments.

And I thought my parents lending me some money to buy my measly one lense was nice of them!

Adopt me! I clean, and play nice with other kids. Oh, and I'm potty trained.

I am also noob to DSLR and out of that list I have purchased the XT and the Tamron lens. Sooooooooooooooo any of the other items in your list would suit me just fine. That must have been a real surprise for her. Hey, we're not that far away from each other. I'm out in Riverside. In your travels through here, we should try to meet sometime. I'm always looking for advice from other photographers and would love the oppurtunity to bend your ear a bit.

John, I hereby nominate you for "Father of the Year"!

Her "Is this what I think it is?" look on the first shot is priceless!

Very nice gift. My parents bought me my first SLR as a gift 27 years ago and I still have it today, a Canon AV-1. My daughter's are quite a bit younger but they both enjoy taking pictures and I plan on giving them a similar gift when the time comes. BTW, the AV-1 still works beautifuly.
