I really like my G2, but recently I was hit with one of its annoying limitations and I just wanted to vent a little. Also, any new G 2 owners might find it of interest.

I was in a fairly dark theater (Fox theater in Atlanta, very cool place) and knew I was going to have to have a long shutter speed. I set it to Av and set it for about 4ish. Got ready to shoot and was kind of surprised that it wouldn’t pick a shutter slower than 1 second.

I don’t understand Canon’s rational for the design decision to limit it to 1â€, but I don’t like it. I ended up having to switch to manual and fiddle with half presses and shutter speeds until I got a correct exposure (ended up needing about 5 seconds). In manual or Tv, the G2 will go to 15seconds. In Av, it is limited to 1â€. What a silly design.

Happy shooting.

I completely agree. I have run into the same problem with my Pro90. It will select 1 second but show it in red, so the camera knows that the shutter is too fast but it won't go any slower. Really dumb. Not quite as dumb as not being able to use the focus assist light on the 420EX flash, but still dumb...

I found this limit a few weeks ago and can offer some relief. Set camera to shutter speed priority and dial in a slow shutter speed. The camera will tell you if you are underexposed by blinking a warning that will dissapear when you get the exposure correct.

In a nutshell, if you favor P mode and the exposure is not long enough. Switch to Tv mode and set the exposure to something like 2 secs. Fool around from there.

It is a silly design indeed. I hate the 1' limit in Av mode.
Under such situation, the only thing i can do and have to do is changing the Av to Tv mode. I Tv, i have to adjust the shutter speed to get a wanted aperture.

****. No, no, no. I like my G2 by no means.
