Decided to take the tubes for a spin. I think I'm quite happy, now. Much less frustration than with a reversed lens, plus, provided nothing is obstructing the flash, the flash works well.

Working distance is still a bit short, so a very nervous insect may not be an easy shot.

1) Fire Ant.

3) Unidentified Insect. About the size of the ants. Looked right at me as I took his picture, then quickly ran off when the flash fired.

Good shots. What lens are you using with the tubes?
#1 looks as if it could do with a bit of noise reduction.

The 50mm 1.8. #1 was accidentally shot at ISO1600, also cropped a bit. I didn't put it through NeatImage, but now I suppose I should have :oops:

Hiya MRaiford,
Nice shots agree with Brian about the noise, Those fire Ants are mean critters I've recently watched a documentary about them think it was called " the Ant that eat America" looks like you don't need to get to close to them.

Yep. They're quite a nuisance where I live. Very agressive. Interestingly there were the fire ants and some black ants, which are much smaller. I was surprised to see the black ants. Usually they're obliterated by the fire ants.

Permanent ban

Not bad shots, but as others have said, #1 is very noisy. What ISO was this taken at? I suspect natural light with no flash and ISO bumped highish (no EXIF data for the image, so I'm having to guess). The 2nd re-worked shot still looks like noisy and has heavy jpeg artifacts to boot. What sort of noise reduction process are you using, and how are you resizing the images as well? I did a quick run with Neat Image (defaults) - looks much better to my eyes. The free version of Neat Image will do this same level of noise cleanup.

What were your settings in Neatimage? Did you choose the noise area yourself, or use the auto profile? I've had neatimage for years, but never managed results this good with so much noise.

The image was shot at iso1600 accidentally, flash was fired, but because of the high iso there was a lot of noise.

Resize was CS2 bicubic (can't remember if it was softer or sharper) I did a slight sharpen after the resize. Maybe one of the differences is I ran NeatImage on the original sized image instead of the resized image... Hmm.

Default profile, nothing more and nothing less. I rarely tinker with Neat Image. That's quite noisy for ISO 1600, does it have noise reduction capability in camera, and if so, has it been turned on? I'm sure my 1D is less noisy than that. In fact, I'd rate that the 1D has better noise at ISO 3200 than that! I usually resize in PS CS2 using bicubic sharper, and then run a pass of USM afterwards. It is quite possible that the Neat Image over the other Neat Image has done that. In some (rare) instances, I'll do two passes of Neat Image.

1 was also a crop, I believe which may explain higher noise. Not only that, but the outdoor temp at the time was nearing 100°
