OK, now what exactly does this mean?

There is a term that I have been seeing quite a bit lately, and that is "pop". For example, take a look at these thread titles:

How to make eyes pop?

Any techniques for making images POP!??

Is there such a thing as too much pop?

How can I make these images "pop"

Make Clouds "Pop" in B/W

can you help me make it "pop"?

Which lens will make the picture POP?

Now, I checked all of the photo lexicons that I could find, Steves Digicam, PhotoNotes,Kodak Professional Glossary, Kodak Consumer Glossary, ProFotos, Digital Exposure, and even DPReview and NONE of them had an entry for "pop". The closest match was from PhotoNotes which has "Popping" listed as "Slides bulging out when in a slide projector, because of the intense heat."

That makes no sense within the context of the links above.

As far as I can tell, "pop" means "too much contrast".

Anyone have an authoritative definition?

With 1,900 posts, me thinks you're trolling (if that's the right word)...

... but I'll bite.

"Pop", to me, is when the subject of a photograph seems to jump off the screen but you can't put your finger on exactly why. It's made up of equal parts appropriate DOF, focus, motion blur (or lack thereof), subject separation and composition, exposure, saturation and contrast. None of them can make up for deficiencies in any other.

Pop doesn't mean too much contrast, that's fake pop. It also doesn't mean a razor thin DOF. It doesn't mean too much saturation (My Kodak could do that) and it doesn't mean oversharpening (Yuk!). All thinks in moderation and concert contribute to pop.

I'm struggling here, so I'll just say it's like pornography in that you know it when you see it

Search for threads in the people section by schmoelzel for examples of 'Pop'.

I guess it would the be photography's "it" factor.

"POP" simply referrs to a photograph having a 3D effect to it.....the image just seems to pop out of the page. Most pictures are very flat. As was mentioned, the best example would be to look at Schmoelzel posts for pictures of Julia. Then you'll know what we mean.

Mr. Jalapeno is very, very good in this area. I have followed many of his suggestions and they work.

I think it may be synonimous with high contrast.

POP! Okay, so I edited it a little....

It normally means too much contrast, saturation and oversharpening, whatever happened to the subtle shades and tones of film?
