My set-up for shooting macro is using the Sigma 70-300mm macro, (for now) with the 430EX, camera in manual.
Whilst shooting away yesterday i had problems with over exposing and under exposing images. What i was aiming for was to simply add fill light.
What i need is some advice about how i should go with the set-up i'm using.
Here's some pics showing my problem.:o

a male Banded demoiselle-never seen one of those but they look beautiful. Dont know why your flash isnt exposing correctly. I see you used f18, ISO 100,manual-maybe try f16 for bit more resolution and aperture priority might let the flash expose correctly automatically.

Good shots- lovely damselfly. Think I'd be tempted to use natural light, ISO 400 Aperture priority F8-F11 with the lens somewhere between 100 and 200mm (ie not macro mode) for damselflies and see what shutter speeds you can get. Think Melvyn Yeo who seems very good at these Fill light shots sets the camera up for about 0.5 stop underexposure using EC then uses the ETTL flash. I've done a similar thing by putting the camera into manual mode and adjusting the aperture or shutterspeed to give on average about 0.5 stop underexposure and then using the ETTL flash on top of that.
BTW have you got some sort of diffuser on the flash?

Thanks guys, Brian i did attach the defuser after taking these shots, but i still had the same problem. I will try the setting you have mentioned.

Racketman - get yourself to the Woodland Garden in Bushy Park - it is only a couple of miles from you and there were loads of demoiselles flying around the streams today.

Banded demoiselles tend to like open slow moving rivers with lots of reed cover. Beautiful demoiselles like faster flowing streams with lots of dappled shade. The males are wonderful to watch with their blue/green irridescence as they vie for the best patches to look for females. They're vicious little brutes too!

Correct
The pics were taken very close to a slow moving river, River Nene, Northants, England.
