Hi all,

Today I treated myself to the 100mm 2.8 macro. Would love some C&C on my first pics with it. Really enjoying it so far!!!

Some damselflies (I think)

Thanks, I think i learned something too. I had the aperture too far open imo. Maybe I should have stopped down a bit and used a flash or something. Any advice is most welcome..

Stop it down to f11 or 13, set the shutter at 1/200 or 1/250 sec and use a diffused flash. You will love the results...

Nice. The damsels/dragons are:
1. Banded demoiselle female
2. Bluetailed damselfly
4. Ruddy darter dragonfly

nice first shots....
cgratti's advice is sound , but i wouldn't go past f/11 (that's where diffraction creeps in on the 20D) and you actually start to lose detail...
here's a link explaining that

Is this only with the 20D? I have the DRebel and have had no problems at f13-16.

no it's on all 1.6 crop factor cameras..... I onl;y said it starts creeping in at f/11.... up to 16 i don't suppose you'll really notice... depends on the subject tho.....
if you're going for real high magnification with extension tubes on the facets of a flys eye for instance it gets noticable pretty quick......
for normal 1:1 shots tho it only starts to become really apparent at about f/22.
when it does become noticable it looks like a soft duffuse glow

I just always stick with f/10-f/11 so that i know that there definately won't be any diffraction probs

as with everything in macro theres a fine line between doing it right and doing it wrong.... I just like to take the diffraction out of the equation (one less thing to worry about)
