My ballhead (468RC2) is suffering from the "jerky movement syndrome". I thought of cleaning/lubricating it. However, I read several contradictory instructions related to using WD-40, isopropyl alcohol and such.

What do you recommend?

I would suggest that you read the pamphlet that was provided with the head. I quote from the pamphlet: The heads are maintenance-free. Do not lubricate with any oil or silicon.

Contacting Manfrotto directly would be advised. It would be a shame to ruin the ball head by using a solvent or lubricant that would damage the materials it is made of.

Is it possible that you've been cranking down on the lever a bit too hard and deforming the ball or its seat a little?

If yours is just dirty, I would use a damp cloth to clean the ball a bit.
