Sari, we can probably work something out. I'm looking at flying into Gatwick, since AirNamibia has direct flights from there to Windhoek. A quick search this morning:

American Airlines Denver/Dallas/Gatwick $800

Continental Denver/Houston/Gatwick $850
Denver/Cleveland/Gatwick $850

Delta Denver/Atlanta/Gatwick $760
Denver/Cincinnati/Gatwick $760

I used Aug 26th thru Sept 16 of this year as the criteria... I suspect the $$$ for next year would be pretty close. So we could arrange to hook up in Dallas, Houston, Cleveland, Atlanta or Cincinnati.... Unless working something with Becca works out better financially.

It would probably make the most sense for me to meet up with you at Gatwick. Most of the connections coming from out west wouldn't work for me (being on the east coast). But I can certainly arrange my flights to meet up with you in London. That would make things easier for Dave and Tommy for airport pickup, if we all came in on the same flight. :)

Becca, I've also been debating with myself.. tripod or no tripod... Remember that Quiver Tree shot? I'd bet dollars to donuts that was an HDR shot. And I like the idea of having the option of taking multiple exposures if I want. I'm gonna have to practice packing and see what's realistic for me and what's not. And if you don't feel like buying a Pod, you could always fill an old sock with sand and tie a knot in it. :) :)

I think I'll probably end up buying a Pod. I've been looking at them for some time (just because I think they are kind of cool!) but I couldn't think of a situation where I would use it. Now I have one! :)

And I agree about the tripod. I think I'm going to try to get it in my duffle. If it won't fit, I might have to buy a new duffle! I've never really mastered my monopod and its kind of cheap so I don't know how it would hold up for a long trip like this.

So we all need to aim for the AirNamibia flight from Gatwick to Windhoek on August 26th. And if Sari can work out a better deal that goes thru Boston or Newark or JFK... Then she can hook up with you for the ride :)

I am thoroughly jealous, first that you got that incredible waterfall. and then you actually caught a rainbow. touched by the lucky photo fairies. And then the bunjee jumping shot. I've wanted to do that all my life (sulking a bit, I would never be allowed to). sounds like a great time, beautiful pictures. Sari

when did I saw that?.. Must have been awhile ago.. No matter. If the oppurtunity comes up to go bunjee jumping i'm first in line........... just don't tell on me... hmm... which post was that?..

That works! As the flights stand now (although we all know how that can change!) the best deal for me to Gatwick is on USAir through Philadelphia. I thought I might be able to get a direct flight from Boston, but nobody flies direct to Gatwick. If we were flying out of Heathrow, no problem, and I don't want to take a chance on a close connection and having to do a transfer between Heathrow and Gatwick. Better err on the safe side and add a connection in Philly.

And if you do go bungee jumping, I'll be the first in line to take the pictures because there's no way I'd be brave enough to jump off anything! (Well, maybe the back of a pickup truck or the second step of a ladder!)

Yeah better calculate with at least 2 or 3 hours between arriving in Gatwick and leaving Gatwick. Depending on the actual schedule I may even choose to arrive in London the day before leaving for Windhoek (I hate having to hurry through an airport). I don't know yet if I will arrive in Gatwick, Heathrow or maybe even Stanstead. Depends where I can get the cheapest price.

Hehe and I will stand right next to You. There is no way I am jumping off anything with a big rubber band attached to my feet.

If I can get a much cheaper flight into Heathrow, I may go the day before and get a hotel near Gatwick. I don't relish the stress of delayed flights and trying to make a connection between airports when the flights only go on certain days. If there were multiple flights into Windhoek each day, I might chance it, but as it is if you miss it, you're done!

Yup. I could probably find a better price into Heathrow too. Too bad they don't have any direct flights to Windhoek. (At least I don't *think* they do... Any one care to confirm that for me?)

I couldn't find any direct flights from Heathrow. They either connect in Frankfort or Johannesburg. AND... they are really pricey! The cheapest flight I found out of Heathrow to Windhoek was around $2600 and took 20 hours! I think Gatwick will be our best bet.

The problem I start to run into here is how many days to travel from point A to point B.... do I need to try to get another day off from work?! I'm already stretching it as it is. :)
