As far as I know, you can still carry on electronic devices (including cameras). If not, I would be very, very bored on the plane, as I always carry my portable media player to listen to music or watch movies. I will not check my 20D or lenses. In my travels, even if my stuff does get to me, items that are potentially fragile will possibly arrive broken. Most baggage handlers do not seem to know the phrase "Handle with Care." Also, check your airline's policy regarding checked items (especially the fine print, because that is where they will state the non-covered items) - I know I will be from now on. I also know that I am really going to make a scene if this ever happens again, either that or I am going to wear all of my expensive electronic devices.
