I had a G5 that I have used underwater while snorkeling. I used a EWA-Marine waterproof housing (which will work for the G3). They retail for around $160-170 at B&H Photo. I was able to take some cool pictures, but I was a little disappionted that I could not see thru the viewfinder or even the LCD screen. My tactics were basically having to point the camera at what I wanted to take a picture of and hope that it was captured. I am a novice at underwater photography though, maybe one of the experts here will chime in. BTW, I may be selling my slightly used EWA-Marine housing since it looks like I will be upgrading to an S3 IS (it is impossible to find a G-series anymore  ).

I'd be interested in that Paul, right now I've only used the underwater disposables which are fun but why pay for them and processing if I can pay once to use my underutilized G3? Plus I'd love to take a movie or two underwater as well.

this is from a disposable I used just a couple days ago.

I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, here are a few photos that I took last summer at the Dry Tortugas in Florida:

These were taken at around noon, which is probably why there is such a color cast.

A little PS and they would look better I'm sure. I had to tweak the disposable images as well.

ohh man, yea, someone gave my parents one of those for their G3. I definitly experienced the same problems as you. kinda makes it pointless in my opinion. i didnt even bother to try to take shots, i took it strait back in the house. glorified ziplock bag. also the whole not being able to focus thing was wierd, and the controls were horribly hard to use underwater. i gotta say i wouldnt reccomend it to anyone. i mean if its just for simple stuff then fine, but you might just be better off buying a disposible at a drug store.

I used an Aquapac and went snorkeling. I found it difficult at best. Agree with the others, hard to see and use any controls. Then there is the shutter lag. Trying to get pictures of fish moving was near impossible. Plus the bag wants to float and of course, if there are any waves it all just adds to the motion. Good thing it was digital and I could delete 98% of the pictures. Those that were ok, are only ok because the rest were really bad! Your standards drop when nothing is coming out!!!!
Here is an example, no PP...http://c3p1.zoto.com …0/date_uploaded-desc/0-30 (external link)

Good Luck, Paul

Thanks, Paul

So has anyone bought the ultra-expensive hard plastic housings that cost more than the cameras, like the Ikelites? I would really like to know if the low visibility of the LCD screen is a function of the bag or the quality of reflected light underwater.

I have never tried the hard case, but I can not imagine that it would be any better for visability unless it has a special coating or sit deeper inside the hard case to provide some shade.
Thanks, Paul
