Peregrine Falcon

Peregrine Falcons are native to Labrador; winter mirgrant to Newfoundland. Peregrines prefer coastal and inland cliffs and adjacent country, especially in the area of seabird colonies. They prefer open country, particularly shores and marshes where shorebirds and waterfowl are plentiful. They will occasionally occupy large cities. The peregrine will live 12-18 years in the wild. They have few enemies. However, the impact on their food chain by pesticides such as DDT has resulted in a sharp decline in their numbers, which subsequently resulted in their being considered "endangered" in most parts of the world in recent years.

I love this shot. He looks weary to me, a look you don't often see in birds. Makes me sad we are soo thoughtless with their environment.

Excellent capture Frank, but there is something in the look of that Falcon, the stare is not as vibrant as the other Falcon photos I've seen. Or maybe it's just me.

A great shot Frank, of a beautiful raptor. Peregrines are making a comeback thankfully. Where I go rock climbing in New Hampshire there are certain cliffs closed every year during nesting season until the chicks fledge. This year, like almost every other there have been more successful nests and chicks than the year before. While I was up in Bar Harbor, ME this weekend there were also cliff and trail closings, some for the first time, because of Peregrine nests and chicks. Unfortunately there has been talk because of this to take them off of the US endangered species list. I hope they realize it is too soon for that.
