This was my first attempt at shooting surfing. It was in santa Cruz in January. Just now getting around to posting it. All C+C is welcome.

For you first attempt, it's a good photo. From a general photography aspect, it's sharp where it needs to be, but with some blur in the board and the water spray, you haven't lost that sense of motion. From a surf-photography aspect, it's cropped too tight. It's good to see the wave (size, form, etc.) and, sometimes, the surfers line (where he came from and where he's going).

Yeah I see how that makes sense. Thanks for the tip. I just had a heck of a lot of fun shooting it.

It doesn't look like there was much of the wave to see. It looks like it was a very small day. Personally, I like the shot. You won't see anything like it in Surfing magazine but for some reason it works.

One thing that might look better is if you could see more of the spray he is kicking up in the top right corner.

Thanks for all the responses and geat suggestions. As far as how ai got so close .. well, I was in Santa Cruz near the Surfing Museum, I think it was, and the waves we breaking just off the boardwalk above. I used a Sigma 100-300 with a 1.4 tc (a combo I no longer have). I dont know much about surfing, I was born and raised in Indian. Watersking I know. LOL. So it was cool to watch and shoot. I had a blast. Cant wait to do some more.

Cheers

Craig
