guess you'd have to move in closer for a detail shot to count as macro - I asssume its quite big? Then again thats probably as close as you want to get with pincers like that!

A lower shot IS a good idea, might be worth trying more diffused light. Perhaps bounce flash off a lassolite reflector if the ambient light is no good.

Some sort of freshwater crayfish?

We have several types of similar crustaceans in Australia, each with a different name depending on where they are found.
