Hi Gizmo,

Images look a tad underexposed, and a bit soft in focus. Not bad for first attempts though, so don't panic. If possible, try and get a shot from front on as well, as in portraiture, the eyes are critical I feel. Looks like a wolf spider, I take it that it moved quite quickly, hence the chance to get many shots.

Good first shots.

You missed the focus in the first one (but not by a lot). The second one is more accurate, but you're still looking for the head to be the center of the focus.

As said before, both images are definitely unexposed (but nothing that can't be fixed). I have the Sigma 70-300 you have in your sig, and assuming this was taken with that lens you did very well. It gets really hard to hold that sucker steady at the long end ;).
