Go into the Photoshop Help routine, and under the index go to the "S" and then down to "Select". That will give you all the different methods that your version of Photoshop uses to select an object.

Once you have it selected, hold down the CTRL key and press the "C" key. Then move over the the other photo, hold down the CTRL key and press the "V" key.

This will copy the selection to the new photo.

Depending on the resolutions, you may need to move and / or resize the pasted selection.

My favorite tool to make a selection is the pen tool. It seems hard at the beginning, but is a wonderful tool. Select the pen and start clicking around the subject you want to isolate. If you want straight lines, just click. If you want curves, click and drag and you'll see the curve and you'll also see how every anchor point has two direction lines. Selecting the ends of this lines you can modify the curves. Even when you have the Pen Tool selected, you can modify the curves as you draw them by pressing Control (Apple Key in Mac) and you'll see your icon changes to a white arrow that lets you grab the ends of the direction lines or the anchor points and modify them.
Once you have a curve all around your subject, go to the Path menu, choose option "Make Path Selection" (on the menu that drops on the right side of the Paths window) and you'll have your subject selected.
When the background is not too complex, you can get good results with the Extract filter (takes some practice).

There is no spoon...

Though it's fairly well hidden, there's a magnetic pen in Photoshop CS2. Select the Freeform Pen, and select the Magnetic option. If you want further options, there's a drop-down at the right of the 'shapes' in the option bar.

Another option if you use Windows is to use GrowCut (external link).
