Sorry can't help with the ID but the photos are great - the colour range is absolutely superb.

QUOTED IMAGE

That is a very nice shot of a "hawk" moth (external link)!

From above link...
"They are some of the fastest flying insects (external link), capable of flying at over 50 km/h (external link) (30 miles per hour (external link)). They have a wingspan of 35-150 mm (external link). Some hawk moths, like the hummingbird hawk moth (external link), hover in midair while they feed on nectar (external link) from flowers (external link) and are sometimes mistaken for hummingbirds (external link), even in continents where hummingbirds are not found."

I believe it is a hummingbird moth. I don't know the name of it but it is a moth that flies and acts just exactly like a hummingbird. It is just smaller. There is more than one variety but I don't know anymore than that. :-)

Hummingbird hawk moths are summer migrants from the European continent to the UK. As already mentioned, they look like hummingbirds because of the way they hover while nectaring with the longest proboscis I've ever seen. I've seen them several times but never been lucky enough to capture an image of one so I am very jealous of your fine shot. What part of the world did you shoot those, Spatz? The USA?
