Ok, I'm in the process of convincing my husband to purchase a 20 or 30D

In the meantime...

I have a EOS Rebel TI (film)
and a Powershot s1 IS

Today i'm takeing my sister to take some outdoor pics for practice. It is very sunny and hot, but its an availble day for both of us. Very bright today.

Any suggestions for apature/shutter speed settings. The last ones I took were perfect except she was under exposed in the pictures. I didn't use my spot metering. I'm thinking of using the powershot mainly because the last time I took pics w/ my EOS they didn't convert well to digital images.

So while I'm WAITING, do you have any beginner tips for today?

hard light is difficult to work with and I generally avoid it whenever I can.. keep your ISO as low as possible, bring reflectors and a fill flash.. I usually shoot between f4-f6 for portraits,, Look for shade, under a tree on the side of a building and don't forget to cut the shadows across her face or if there's some very noticeable ones along arms etc... good luck and would love to see the shots..

Saravrose has offered excellent advice. Direct sunlight in the middle of day is very difficult to work with, and most people prefer to work with early morning light or late evening light (the golden hours).

If you're shooting people (portraits, etc.) the key is open shade. If you're shooting landscapes, nature, scenics, etc. then you're going to have a more difficult time. Have fun, though, and enjoy your shoot.
