Not certain if this is Volucella inanis or V. zonaria About 15mm long.
#1 with 200mm plus ext tubes natural light. #2&3 MPE-65 flash.

Brian,

Nice capture, of a Volucella zonaria, not the inanis according to my book.
I captured one yesterday, hope you don't mind if I post it on your thread:

Your pictures are have much better detail than mine but my zonaria was even more colourful and slightly larger than yours. Unfortuately in all my exitement of finding this huge thing, I had not noticed I still had my camera set to f2.8 from my limited DOF shots recently. Therefore the first 10 shots were wasted!

Quite a large Hover fly and the third shot has incredible detail as with the others, love the first shot.

Lovely shot Maarten- you are probably right about the ID but the previous specimens of zonaria I'd seen seemed much hairier around the abdomen and were/are bigger than this one.

Love them, great colour. Haven't been able to get close to a hover with the MP-E yet.

Not meaning to be critical (I like your pics otherwise) but the focus is slightly off on the eye for #3. Seems to be focused just past the eye - the hairs on its thorax are in focus. What aperture were you using? The DOF must have been only a couple of mm, if that.

Nice pics anyway!

Great shots Brian. I'm starting to dislike you intensely. :) I see my savings account going down in the near future...the Canon MPE-65 is looking better and better. Don't get me wrong... I know it take more than the lens to produce the outstanding shots you produce. :) I just see the shots and want to buy the lens more and more.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the comments- shot atF11- I was actually trying to get the nose with some focus on the eyes and and the proboscis- probably trying for too much, but I do sometimes want to focus on areas other than the eyes ;)

Thanks Hatch, as I keep on saying this could have been taken with any 1:1 macro lens ( I was only shooting at 1:1 or thereabouts)- it's a big hoverfly.

No haven't tried yet- not sure what advantage it would give apart from shooting above 5:1 and I rarely shoot above 4:1 at the moment. Might give it a go though with some plant material subjects eg pollen anthers or petals. Haven';t tried it with a TC yet either- must do that to see if the IQ drops much- could be an advantage in some cases with focus distance.
