Unfortuately in all my exitement of finding this huge thing, I had not noticed I still had my camera set to f2.8 from my limited DOF shots recently. Therefore the first 10 shots were wasted! Maarten Lovely shot Maarten- you are probably right about the ID but the previous specimens of zonaria I'd seen seemed much hairier around the abdomen and were/are bigger than this one. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/

Seems to be focused just past the eye - the hairs on its thorax are in focus. What aperture were you using? The DOF must have been only a couple of mm, if that. Dan

Thanks for the comments- shot atF11- I was actually trying to get the nose with some focus on the eyes and and the proboscis- probably trying for too much, but I do sometimes want to focus on areas other than the eyes http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/

Hatch1921 wrote: Great shots Brian. I'm starting to dislike you intensely. I see my savings account going down in the near future...the Canon MPE-65 is looking better and better. Don't get me wrong... I know it take more than the lens to produce the outstanding shots you produce. I just see the shots and want to buy the lens more and more. Keep up the great work. Hatch Thanks Hatch, as I keep on saying this could have been taken with any 1:1 macro lens ( I was only shooting at 1:1 or thereabouts)- it's a big hoverfly. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/

racketman wrote: have you tried the MP E65 with the tubes?? No haven't tried yet- not sure what advantage it would give apart from shooting above 5:1 and I rarely shoot above 4:1 at the moment. Might give it a go though with some plant material subjects eg pollen anthers or petals. Haven';t tried it with a TC yet either- must do that to see if the IQ drops much- could be an advantage in some cases with focus distance. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/
