Hi everyone, I have a 700-200 f4L and I am constantly getting this grey smudge on images, like so :

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: NOT FOUND | MIME changed to 'image/png'

I know this can be post processed easily, but I would like to know how to fix it and what is causing it, as I have cleaned both the front and rear glass, possible on some glass inside?

Thanks in advance.

Sean

Looks like dust/dirt on the sensor to me - do you have any other lenses to use?

That is most likely a dust spot on you sensor, does it show up with any of your other lenses?

Unfortunately no, if it is on the sensor do I need to send it away?

Dust spots like this can be cloned out in seconds in your image editor. I have several on my sensor but they only show on sky shot of say f11 and over.

I would try a shot of the sky stopped right down to your smallest aperture on a couple lenses and see if it will then show up. It so, it is dust on the sensor and can be easily cleaned. It it still only shows up on the 70-200 it must be something with the lens. I have had dust in a lens though and it really does not show at all, at least it never in any of the pics I took with it even after searching hard for something.

If everyone's finished gloating/moaning over who said what first :{)#

No, you don't need to send it away. If you're in one of the Creative Modes, there's a "Clean Sensor" option on your menu. This will hold the mirror and shutter open until you power down. During that time you'll be able to use a Rocket Blower or a Copperhill/Eclipse swab to clean off the spot. There are many, many threads on how to clean your sensor; I won't repeat them. Suffice it to say that you're seeing the spot with the 70-200 because you're shooting aircraft with it - this means shooting at the sky, which typically results in a small aperture. You'll see spots much more readily with small apertures, but the lens is irrelevant. Put your kit, or other, lens on, point the camera at a light surface, dial in some +EC and shoot in Av at f/16 and you'll see the spots too.
