Hi there folks...First time post..

I've decided to purchase a Canon Rebel XT.
Is online shopping always cheaper than in-store? Any pros and cons?

Secondly, I want to eventually:
1. take "headshot" pictures for actors
2. nature photography both close up and general landscape shots.

All 3 I'm sure require various lenses. Which ones do I need to focus on?

I live in Los Angeles, so if anyone knows of camera shops in Los Angeles, or can mention online camera shops as well I would greatly appreciate it...

Thanks...

Ray :)

In LA, Samy's (external link).
On the net,B&H (external link).

Generally, online is cheaper. If you check out Samy's website, you'll find that many of the prices are competitive with B&H. However, they charge a 10% premium for in-store purchases.

As for specific lenses, do you have a budget in mind?

Online vs the Photo Store. I use the photo store to feel and touch then I check prices on the net. I bought my Rebel XT Body, Canon 70-200 f4L and Sigma 17-70 from B&H in NYC. B&H gave me great service and price, and no sales tax.

As for lens it depends on what you are shooting. As you can see I am covered from 17mm to 200mm. I would buy just the body and get a good 'walk around lens' first.

I purchased my Rebel XT from B&H instead of using local stores in Orange County because of better pricing. If you are interested in portrait pictures you might invest in the Canon 50mm f1.8. You can see actual pictures taken with this lens by going to the lens section of this forum. Good luck in your decision!

Although the sales price may be close between online and in-store, a $1000 purchase will require another $82.5 sales tax in LA. Now, there is a faily big difference. A $2500 5D, you will have to pay $206 more in-store.

I always try to buy them online, however, a good company that has a good returning/exchaning policy is a must. I always try to use B&H or Amazon.

One reason to buy locally (assuming you have a knowledgable staff at the store, which is not a national chain store that hires high schoolers who walked in with no prior photography experience and are paid minimum wage)

You can walk in and ask for assistance and advice, and you try out the stuff before committing your money.
