Batteries

Canon ones cost bucks! I'm in need of a couple more for my 10D. Anyone know if the clones are worth it, besides costing much less, do they work well. ? There are a few slight differences in them. If they are worth it witch ones are better? Anyone have experience?

Bill, when I purchased my D60 about one year ago, I got that one Canon BP-511 battery. Then I purchased one Lenmar substitute, which has a slightly higher mAH rating. Then I have been alternating those and using them a lot for this year. Finally, a couple of weeks ago, I sensed that maybe they weren't holding their charge quite as long as when they were new, so I bought another one from Green Batteries. For $30, it looks exactly like the Canon BP-511 and has the slightly higher capacity like the Lenmar. So far, I haven't shot more than twenty shots on the new one, so I can't say any more.

I use this rig for shooting weddings, so I can't have my batteries go belly-up in the middle of a ceremony.

I believe that you will get normal performance out of any of these as long as you charge them on the (intelligent) Canon charger. If you slide off there onto a dumb charger, then it can't be good for the battery, and it might be harmful unless you carefully monitor battery charging.

I have a full set of the Canon batteries for each one of my cameras, I also have a set of Maha's and two sets of some ultra-cheapo (less than $25 for a set of two) generic brand. As for daily usage, can't tell any difference between them. For the long haul? The jury is still out. I've had my D60 Canon batteries for a year now and they're still kicking strong. The Maha's are at about 5 months and the generics at 3 months.

I have been using a set of MAha Powerex MHBP-511s from day one. After 15,000 shots they are holding up fine and last longer than canon. They were $30.00 each.

I think if you get a good recognized brind like the Powerex or Lenmar you will do much better than Canon batts at less than half the price.

I will post again in acouple of days to tell my findings on my two new batteries that are on the way. I purches two BP511 replacement on ebay that are a bit higher capacity than the original Canon battery that cqame with my DRebel. I got two for less than $20. Someone on another photo community mentioned that these batteries are good to use. Again I will let you know...Dean

I also bought two on Ebay in this price range and have been using them since July. I honestly can't detect any difference with the Canon brand.

I bought a genric BP-512 from Battery Barn. At first it really worked well and easily outlasted the Canon BP-511, but after a year I noticed it had faded to about the same life.

Either will last me for a whole days shooting and almost fill up a 1g microdrive without switching. I also have the review turned off. I only use review once in a while to check histograms.
