At the beach today a LIFEGUARD walked up to me and said:
"what do you think you are doing?"
i said i was taking pics of the people with jet ski's
he then went on to tell me not and stop taking pics becuase there are too many kids. At 15, im a pedophile????

It is unfortuantely sad in this day and age that you can't take a picture near kids, in case people think you're a pedo, you can't take pictures near women, incase people think you are a perv, you can't even take pictures of buildings in case people think you are a terrorist.

*sigh*

I think it's how you conduct yourself that will determine how people look at you. Of course we all love to judge people we don't even know so I'm not surprised how worried some people can be and how trusting others are.

Look confident, look like you know what you're doing, and most importantly smile. Ask the Mr. MDJAK. Don't look sneaky, let them know you want their picture and give them a smile.

Funny thing that happened to me once was when I came across a birds of prey exhibition held in a public place.

The moment I put on my 80-200/2.8L, the Eagle Owl did not look at any of the dozens of other P+S wielding photographers any more ... he only had eyes for my lens :D

Best regards,
Andy

some cameras, some lenses,
and still a lot of things to learn...

I wouldn't recommend that you challenge his authority, especially since you're only 15. But I think you deserve some more definitive guidelines. It would be reasonable to ask him to explain the beach's official policy on photography, and to ask for it in writing if possible.

With a 70-200 f/2.8 and a canon 1D MKIIN:
"Whoa, is that a canon? I didn't know canon made cameras that big" (all the while pointing at his digital elph)

Nothing special really. The len's I was using wasn't even that big, just my 105 macro.. Anyways was at a dog park taking photos of my own dog's when some guy asked me to take pictures of his dog and asked what magazine they were going to be in..

I've had comments a few times about my stuff being too big and I should get something small like they're point and shoot.. I just tell them mine's a real camera and that I didn't want a toy like that crap.. I just hate it when people bother me and tell me to get something like theirs. Nerh.

While at the zoo yesterday, wearing my POTN shirt and neckstrap, this guy says, wow that's a huge camera, you must be an old fashioned photographer, then he started telling me about how they are just coming out with cameras like mine that are digital, but they cost $20,000 ... blah blah blah, I just acted interested while continuing to take my shots until he went away LOL

Me: "excuse me could you move please your blocking the view."

Him: "With that lens you should be able to see right through me"
