hey i just had an idea, why not give away lessons to photographers on how they should defend themselves if a complete stranger tries to steal ur camera

LoL… During training they didn’t teach us many non-harming techniques back in the 80’s and early 90’s. Today’s military is probably a lot different than back then. I really want to go back to Ft. Bragg to see what has changed.

Now, I would NOT give a Bragg officer any lip. Just slowly do what they say :) With Delta Force, 7th SF Group (my unit), 82nd Abn Division (my first unit), psyops HQ, Pope AFB, 18th Abn Corps HQ, 7th Cav (gone now), one of the satellite CIA offices and a bunch of other blackout areas (marked with black lines on gov maps) it was rough being a fledgling photog while in the military.

I've been debating on whether to reply privately or publicly. I chose publicly.

Who could blame him, not once did you give him a straight answer if we are to believe your post.

Maybe between the flip remarks you could have actually told him what you were doing there and handed him a business card.

If you're what passes for a professional photographer in your community I pity them all.

Uh, no, no need for pity, but cause for applause. The cop was wrong, the photog was right. The cop started the whole thing off poorly, and deserves every answer he got. Upon arrival, his initial scene assessment should have been sufficient to realize there was nothing improper; a few questions of the photographer regarding the assignment should have been enough to complete the case and show the nosy resident that the PD did show up and act on the complaint.

Complaint does not indicate guilt.

I only trained with them (very interesting stories btw), but from what I understand they are prohibited from operating in the US you have nothing to worry about.... ??? or do you.

Now a quick foray back onto the topic...
I was ogling some Lenses today, and it struck me that, while small compared to telephoto lenses, they're darn big compared to the lens on any and every P&S or superzoom, and even quite a bit larger than the primes I have for my K-1000.
They aren't that small!

Best one I personally got was when I took one of the Hasselblad and a 300mm lens from my college with a Polaroid back and 220 film magazine to a race before the local track got closed, and I was using a 500c full manual to get the shots that I wanted on film. Some random guy walks up and says that his g5 is a better camera for what I was doing because it was digital. I just said if you think so and continued to shot away. After a few more hours, some other guy goes in and is talking to that guy with the g5, he then comes to me and says "should I tell him that just the lens on that camera is worth 3x as much as his camera?". I say if you want, the man then comes back and asks if he can use my Hasselblad to shoot the races.
Only thing like that I have ever had happen to me, but that I hope will soon change.

Don't forget that we've only heard the photographer's side of the story - hardly enough to make a sensible or balanced judgement on the situation.

I had some armed response rozzers threaten me with a £3000 ($6000) pound fine if I took pictures of them in the street. I just carried on and took the pictures anyway. It's not like they're the sas or anything. Station getting above me thinks.

I was unloading my camera gear the other day having parked at a meter and started walking to the studio with tripod etc and then noticed two armed police with machine guns staring at me. Turns out that it was the house of a cabinet minister. It struck me that from a distance a black Manfrotto may look like a weapon. In London these days you can't be too careful :(

Reminds me of a photographer in Iraq during Desert Storm I was escorting from unit to unit telling me that the previous week 2 Iraqi's surrendered to him while he was taking photo's of destroyed buildings a mile away from his attached unit... Thought that was funny. It was Nikon though
