I get more cameras that way!!. What is really funny is when you just walk up and ask for the camera. People fom all walks of life will look at you strangely and then give you the camera!!

i've done the opposite of that - when holding rubbish (like empty drink bottles, chip packets, etc) and not seeing where i can dispose of it, i've held it out to people without saying anything- they ALWAYS reach out and take it, even though they know its rubbish!

i havent yet tried it with complete strangers i must admit - but the reach and take autopilot is so strong that people will do it without thinking - and then its their problem LOL

I used to do that years ago when I worked at an amusement park. I was a ride operator and people were always handing us operators their camera for safe keeping. This was back in the very early days of film P&S cameras. We would always ask, "So, do you want me to take your picture?" They always said "Yes." So we would.

THEN we would take one as they left the station, another when their coaster got to the top of the hill, the next train full of riders, we usually found a good looking woman or two, of course we ALWAYS shot the "After the ride" shot and then handed their camera back to them. We ALWAYS took more than one shot (usually two or three), but one day one of my buddies took 32 of 36 frames from roll of film bought at the park for $12! That was the first time someone complained about our antics and it got us all a warning that we might lose our jobs if we did it again!

Oh, those were the good 'ol days!

I've been reading this thread off and on for months and I finally have something to add....

I was the contracted photog for a wedding last Saturday and I'm walking by one of the Groomsmen with 30D/BG/70-200 f/2.8 IS/580EX...

Him: You could hurt someone with that.
Me: Yeah, I shoot people with it all the time.
Him: That's too funny....

I didn't think so.

I've been lurking around for a while...just finished reading the first 75 pages of this thread. Based on these comments, seems like you've got some great members and it's a cool place. I hope to be posting more!

Anyways...

I was out shooting with a friend of mine in Grand Rapids a couple months ago (at night), when a man who was jogging through the city told us "you've got some competition up ahead!" We were confused, and slightly hopeful that we'd run into a photography club or something. Anyways, we get up to a bridge, and there is a guy about our age, next to a girl who was obviously his girlfriend, hunched over a camera on tripod (either a sony or olympus dslr). He was clearly trying to "teach" his gf photography.

Me: "Hey, how's the shooting going?"
Guy: "Ok, having some trouble getting these shots out though."
Me: "What ISO are you at?"
Guy: Huh?
Me: "How about what Shutter speed?"
Guy: "Oh, I'm not sure." (changing subject) "That's a nice camera you've got"
Me: Yeah, It's just a Rebel XT, but I'm using a 28-135 f3.5-5.6 IS with USM lens"
Guy: "I have no idea what that means, but it sounds cool!"
Me: Alright, well, good shooting!
His Girlfriend: *Gives Wink and Smile at me as I walk away...*
Guy: *Looks Irritated that I proved in front of his girl that he knows nothing about photography*

I was shooting another event in Grand Rapids. I had been there for two days with no problems. Lots of great comments, got hit on and asked to take a few pictures all the time. Even got a couple phone numbers :). Also chatted it up with the official photog, seemed a nice guy. Then...late one night they had Lou Gramm in from the band Foreigner, and it was packed. I was trying to move in to get a better vantage point and got tons of "hey, this is my spot" and "what the hell are you doing." I was being nice, asking people to move so I could just move through, I didn't even stand in front of anybody. My friend leans up to me and says "We gotta get out of here. I don't want one of these drunks screwing up my equipment."

So... we go to the back entrance, might mention that we shoot stuff for the campus newspaper (who knows, maybe some of it might have gotten in there!) , get ushered right up to the stage, and I got 2 songs of pure shooting bliss, 20 feet in front of the idiot fans. On my way out, I head one audience member call out "those lucky b*st*ards."

I will say that when it was nicer out, people were great at getting me right to the front of the crowd because "he's a professional."

Before a party I was telling my friend, who had just gotten his first dSLR that I expected two things to happen that night. I'd let people hold my camera, and they'd 1. Try to use the LCD. 2. Try to zoom my 50mm prime. I wasn't dissapointed. The sad part is, the person who did both was someone who I knew as a fairly good amateur, and who I was certain had used an slr before!

Not quite related to this thread, but still a funny story...
I was in a hotel room with a couple friends, and the lights were off and we were going to sleep. It was getting hot, so one of my friends started making his way across the room to turn the heater off. It was pitch black. Without a word, I reached over to the night stand, picked up my camera and flipped the flash off, and then strobed him repeatedly. I've never seen someone look so confused! It was one of the best silent comments ever!

I'm going to have the 70-200 f4 soon, so I'm sure I'll get even more comments! (I'm in Green Bay, WI for a week, and NO ONE carries them in stock for a good hour's drive around. I'll just have to wait till I'm back in Michigan, can walk into Norman camera, grab one and pay, and be out in 5 mins).

Thanks guys. :) I've got another one below. The comment at the end isn't hilarious or anything, but when I was at my witt's ends and nervous, it was quite funny to me at the time!

I just remembered another event from the same event as the Lou Gramm one I mentioned before. This was on another night, and was actually on a second stage that was located in a park, Kimberley Locke from American Idol was performing. The stage was on the top of the hill, and we were allowed to get as close to it as possible without actually going on it. I can't remember the lens I had on, probably the 28-135 (It was a friend's lens that I was trying out for fun). Anyways, I'm happily taking pictures up on this hill, lying down, surrounded by 50 ten year old girls with their P&Ss and Cell Phone's out. It's getting darker, and all of a sudden, I get pushed to the side. Next to me is this very large man, also lying down, extremely sweaty, and clutching a photo of Kimberley Locke.

He kept on yelling stuff out to her... "Kimberley! Kimberley! I love you! Are you from Tennessee? Are you proud to be from there? Did you know Whitney Houston..." and on and on. At one point, Kimberley and him actually had a short conversation back and forth, the entire time I could tell she was rather nervous and wondering where the heck security was (there wasn't a single one around). I got a couple good shots of her nerves if I recall, but I wasn't shooting that much during this. I was getting concerned too, and realized that if he rushed the stage, I was probably the only guy around large enough to subdue him before he got to Locke.

Eventually, however, the music started up again, and he returned to shaking on the ground starring up at her. At one point, however, he leans over to me and says "I bet you got a good picture of her. (As I picture him stealing my camera). Think you could send me one?" I said sure, but never did. (I usually do, but...this seemed a special case).
