It's not the more megapixels that make it necessarily a better camera.

It's the features and the IQ.

Don't forget lenses too, as well as a photographically competent person handling the camera :)

Less megapixels, less zoom, screen size, blah blah blah.

When will the misconceptions about what makes a quality digital camera STOP.

Honestly... the mexapixel race is over and I'm surprised the world cant see that. Hell I was even reading a photography magazine, and in it's beginners guide page it said more megapixels = better quality.

I wanted to shoot someone.

i guess people will forever think that more megapixels = better camera :(

It depends, that statement is probably too broad. (all other things equal) more megapixels does equal better camera, especially for someone like me who likes to crop bird pictures because my lenses don't have enough reach

More megapixels only becomes a bad thing if increased noise is greater than the advantage that the extra resolution gives, or if your lenses resolving power is crap and starts looking crap at higher resolution

There is a reason why the 1Ds Mk III is like 21 megapixel now, such high resolution is very valuable

For all you know she was trying to hit on you

I would have run for the hills if she had been, since she was at least 30 years my senior. Also, her husband who was with her probably wouldn't have been too pleased either.

Im not saying it isnt. It would be great for many things.

Yes but when your average punter holds up their 12 megapixel P&S and feels superior against your 20D, it is not the product of their stupidity, moreso the product of incorrect marketing.

A 6megapixel p&s doesnt mean its a worse camera than a 12mp one.

You analogy seems to fall down when you then go look at the Noink D3. It's only 12mp, and don't dismiss it because its a Noink, its a great camera and its made canon sit up and think.

Getting a bit off topic now though, i think ill have to stop.

but I agree that it is pathetic when people think their little p&s is better than a top-of-the-line DSLR

Depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

Good macros are much easier to achieve with a P&S because of the DOF "advantage", SLR macro can be down right insanity inducing because of the razor thin DOF.

I'm sure there are other examples, but that one jumped to mind.

It depends what you define as a "good macro", since some of the best macros I've seen are because of the razor-thin DOF. Once again it comes down to the operator.

Ha ha, love the spotting scope one from Greece.

Yesterday I was at the bird sanctuary (taking pictures of course) when I had the following conversation:

Equipment was 1DII w/300mm + 1.4X II

Me - *sound of shutter several times*
Random Lady - *standing quietly next to me*
Me - *more shutter*
Random Lady - "so what type of birds are those?"
Me - "Cormorants"
Me - *shutter*
Random Lady - "are you taking pictures of them"
Me - *profound silence. . .* "uh, yes?"
Random Lady - "Oh" *walks away*

I'm too polite to give sarcastic comments to strangers. She was asking for it though!

Just the other day I was waiting at my GF's apartment taking photos with my new lens and was getting intimate with a boring seed pod in a bush. Someone walked up, greeted me and asked if I was shooting "something cool" "like a possum or something." I couldn't lie, but I sure as hell couldn't say "Yes, you can see all the grains of dirt with 100mm Macro!"

Last night I gave a presentation on my Alaska eagle trip to an outdoors group I'm a member of. As part of the talk I brought my camera gear for show and tell. I had the 500mm f/4 on the 1D Mark III sitting on the table. One of the questions I got (person was joking of course) was "what kind of ammunition does that thing take?!?" So I pulled out my CF card and and said "square bullets!" Before that someone had asked me if it was a film camera and others were curious about how many photos I could take on a card. Oh and of course I got the inevitable question about how much zoom it has!

I think the answer to prime zoom questions should be started from 0 and calculated, if you wish, based on whether it's FF or crop. So you yours would be 650x. Just to give people and answer and then smile when they look at there 70-300 and instead of laughing like the ignorant people they are, they just stand and stare. :D

I usually just tell them "500", because it says 500 right on the lens! ;) I didn't give any sarcastic answers last night though, since it was a presentation and people were supposed to be asking questions!

helping to stay on topic...
I had gotten the 70-200 2.8IS and I was at the studio where some other students had gathered and I saw a friend whom I haven't seen in awhile, now stop me if I told this one already :-P, but yeah when she saw me instead of saying hi the first thing she says is "trying to compensate for something?" :-/
my only response was yes...my photography. but after that we finally caught up a bit :-)
