Some random stranger asked to hold your camera, which he just acknowledged as being expensive? What an idiot!

I went to buy an SD card for my Mom's P&S (she lives overseas and they are about 5 times cheaper here) the lady at the register asked me:

"Did you know you could erase the pictures from the card after you transfer them to your computer ? It's so cool, I didn't know it at first and now I have 11 cards at home !"

I just wanted to bang my head on the wall after that LOL

People like that shouldn't be allowed near technology.

I think it's silly and elitist to make fun of people asking about zoom by replying with meaningless numbers or numbers they can't understand. They're just asking a simple question that *does* have an answer.

If you've got a 500mm telephoto sitting on a 1.6 crop body, it's not hard to say "well, this lens is fixed and doesn't actually *zoom* but it is about equivalent to a 23x zoom on a regular camera" or even just "on this camera it's a 23x fixed zoom."

I don't have a white lens, but a 1 foot long lens... (Sigma 70-300mm)
I was at the park near where I live getting pictures of the fire helicopter (During the SoCal fires in October of '07, the firemen would land the helicopter in the park, attach the hose to it to fill it up, and then it would take off)
Anyway, after getting plenty of shots I started to leave (Now remember, I was only 14 at the time) and this group of kids with a few parents come up with gifts and cards for the firemen (At this time, the helicopter was just parked there and the firemen were taking a break (The fires had moved pretty far away) so the kids go up and start giving them food, cards, and other gifts, so of course I get some shots... The pilot of the helicopter comes up to me and says
"You better not be putting these pictures in the newspaper" (fairly seriously) so I say "Ummm, no there just for me" he said in a jokingly way: "Good, because I don't want any pictures of me picking my nose in the paper" *Laughs*

Yeah, sorry for the long story...
So here is another, lol:

During the fires, helicopters were also scooping up water in a nearby lake, so I ask my mom to drive me over there for some pictures, I get up on a small hill and start firing away while my mom is at the bottom of the hill with all the other folks watching, and then she hears a lady saying "Oh my gosh, look at that little kid with such a big lens!" and then she started taking pictures of me

I like you're thinking.

"Believe it or not , it has no zoom. It's fixed zoomed out" is what I usually tell people when they enquire about one of my tele lenses. Most often it's my 400 5.6L, so I mention the big white lenses they have probably noticed at sporting events and explain they are usually the same "zoom" , but cost 5 times as much as mine. If they seem more knowledgeable , I will mention the focal length and explain it's similar to what a lot of compact digital cameras can do , but with much better quality.

The reason NO firefighter wants to see his Mug in the paper... There is an unwritten rule that ANY firefighter that has his image, likeness or even back of his turnouts (some stations). He has to buy dinner for the whole station. In some departments that means that he has to go to the store, get the food come back to the station and cook it for the crew.!!

What happens if EVERYBODY is in the shot? (like during a 3 alarm fire or something where there are a lot of firefighters present)

Just for the record, I have never really responded to anyone that the zoom on my lens is "500." If they ask I tell them it has no zoom and is a fixed focal length. At my presentation last night, there really were no stupid questions (except the guy who asked how the eagles find food when I had just explained that there is a huge salmon run in November, but anyway). They all saw the photos and I think they got the idea that my efforts combined with some good equipment were what produced some really nice photos. I explained about why a large aperture was needed (to let in a lot of light due to the high latitude and the late time of year) and about the difference between the 70-200 and the 500, and a wide angle. I think some of the sarcastic answers here are simply in the spirit of the thread, not that you're really going to give that answer to someone who is asking an honest question.

The one who in focus the best will end up being the cook perhaps?
