yeah...like...you take it out of the box, set it on the counter and WHAM! It produces a work of art...fully automatic!!! geez!

unfortunately this is the mentality of most people :(

Try using "yes, and Rembrandt had very talented paint brushes". ...

another similar way to say it would be "sure, they sell my camera model in the store right next to Rembrandt's paint brushes" or pick another famous artist.

I try not to let other peoples ignorance about my hobby bother me, because I really don't know much about theirs, and I am liable to say something stupid about their hobby :(

Mine as well - it still produces steaming piles of rubbish most of the time.

I mean it couldnt be user error could it?

Try using "yes, and Rembrandt had very talented paint brushes". Then :p them

I got my camera from the same store Ansel Adams bought all his stuff, so I should be set.

EDIT: To be fair to all the "must have a great camera" comments, they are true. Most of the pictures people are used to seeing come from P&S or (shudder) cell phone cameras, so the reality is that the camera does play a role in those great pictures.

Perfect opportunity for you to say "Hey! It will be MUCH cheaper to hire me as (1)I already have the equipment and (2)I know how to use it :)

I wanted to share a cute but aggravating comment I have gotten several times.....

(While looking thru some photos I had taken and edited.... a lady says .." OH MY GOODNESS.....these are so nice... I have GOT to go buy me one of those cameras like yours!!! You have an amazing camera!!!"........... UGHhhhhhhhhhhhhh! lol

Not too much of a funny comment, however me and a friend were at an airshow this past weekend (me with a 100-400L, him with a 400L 5.6) and while they were doing the legacy flight (an F-15, F-86 and a P-51 flying together), they did a low pass directly overhead and soon after they went over this lady comes rushing up to us almost in a panic wondering if we got pictures of it and if we were professionals.

Eventually it came to be that she wanted a shot of it for some family that was in the military and wanted to buy a few prints of it.

It wasn't till then did I realize that sometimes white = green.

OK maybe not a comment with a big lens on, but with two more coming in the mail:

My wife asked the other day how much have I spent on gear (I have bought all the gear in my signature in the last 4 months!) I just turned white and lost my ability to speak. I was speaking to her over skype too from Iraq and still just couldn't find the words! I finally muttered something like $5,000. You know, ballpark, sorta.

That list does not include some items like my two lowepro bags, the slingshot 200 & 300, my manfroto monopod with head, multiple memory cards and extra batteries and other misc small needs.

I am sure some of you can relate to that question from the significant other at one time...

I've been pulling remote camera's for other guys when I take my remote down, just to be nice and this past week, I pulled 8 camera's (my personal best) and gear from the catwalk. I got the funny comment of being a "Christmas Tree". When I walked into the media center, almost all of the photog's were ready with their camera's and a wide angle, then took pics of me taking the gear off. Took like 10 mins with 3 guys helping me. LOL

It's really funny because the 3 shooters that know me from the whole season know what I do and told the other photog's, about it, but apparently, they didn't believe it. I may be small, but I can haul 150lbs worth of stuff with no sweat. Never want to mess with a sports photog... I'm pretty beefy. :p
