LOL I don't think people take very good care of the school camera. When I took it today it was missing the lens hood, which is currently the only source of protection for the front element since the lens cap has been missing for a while. But I'm pretty sure someone else dropped it a while back and a filter took the fall or something. When I used the camera for the first time a while back, I saw a small 2-3mm chip at the edge of the front element, and tiny shards of glass in between the element and the barrel.

It's a shame that there are a lot of people out there who could care less about public items. Even in my office, I have people abusing the microwave and other common items just because they don't own it.

Well, in a school there are also a lot of clumsy beginners. The abuse isn't necessarily intentional.

Anyway, in response to the original wisecrack ("How would you know it had been dropped?") the answer is obvious: the pictures would suddenly be in focus!

All I want is a 10-2000 f/0.5L with no distortion that weighs 100 grams, fits in my pocket, and costs $300. Is that too much to ask?

I think maybe she is assuming you should drop it because it's a Nikon...

If it were that easy you would be seeing Nikon owners throwing their cameras at the ground all over the place.

Oh wait.... Nevermind.

Funny thing about that I was at an off-road race this past weekend and there was a Nikon shooter how was placing his lens in the dirt when he was switching them. Not even setting it upright on the lens hood. It looked like a 200-400 or is it a 500?

the amount of sweat and blood that I have shed to be able to afford my gear makes me cringe when I see someone being careless with the equipment that they are using :( anyway back to the 'ridiculous comments' W00T!

Got lots of comments today when I was photographing a big science competition at school today.
---
Random teen: Hey look! It's CP24! (CP24 is a big news station in Toronto)
---
*Me taking out my 70-200*
Classmate: Whoa? What is that thing?
Me: It's a rocket launcher!
---
Funniest comment I got today was from my homeroom teacher who has a 40D+28-135. For the event I decided to use the school's yearbook camera (Nikon D80+18-70) slung over my shoulder for wider angle shots with my 50D+70-200 around my neck.

Teacher:*pointing to Nikon over my shoulder* Is that yours or the school's?
Me: It's the school's camera
Teacher: Did you drop it yet?
Me: (Laughing) No, not yet
---
Also got tons of the usual "is it digital?" and "how much did it cost?", to which I replied "yes" and "umm, a lot? I really shouldn't say". I find it really annoying though when people ask me how much my equipment is, especially since they don't really need to know anyway

The other day a classmate said to my mkIII clicking at 10fps
"you know you can turn off that annoying sound"
I then attempted to explain that the sound was the moving parts in the camera uhhhh... moving....

Should tell him... that 10fps, is music to my ear :D

I haven't heard it personally, but I do like the sound of 6.5fps when I still have my 40D

Shooting anything noisy I don't mind it, but when I am shooting something quiet I wish that there was a silent mode that didn't slow down the reaction time so much...

Oh, me shooting swimming in pouring rain with mk III and 70-200 2.8 IS, I walk under cover to change lens, and somebody in the year above me with a sony camera (looks like the sony drebel) asks me if my camera is fine with the rain, I say that it is sealed and have used it in worse conditions so it will be fine, he then goes oh, well mine is also sealed (in a I am better than you sort of voice) and proceeds to shoot the next 10 minutes in pouring rain, before his camera dies....

Oh, and to add to that just the other day someone wanted to "suck my camera off" then while I was shooting asked if I though that eating human crap was better than eating animal crap..... There are some serious serious weirdos in this world.....

That reminds me... I was shooting @ Riverside' Mission Inn 2 weeks ago with a friend (Nikon shooter) and he told me "Your shutter sounds weird and harsh"... I just told him "If only I still have my 40D......." then I thought of this thread

I was taking photos of my car under a bridge today because I plan on selling it soon. Had the 17-40 out. A white car rolls by with the windows down and a guy shouts "aaaaay, you selling that thing?"

Obviously someone who was looking for bargains in slightly used bridges.
